Make Your own root Beer

This page shows how to make your own home brewed root beer. This recipe just used prepackaged root beer extract, but there are websites that can show you how to boil up the sasafras roots to make you own flavoring.

Ingredients for a 2 liter bottle:

3/4 cup of sugar
1/2 tsp yeast, regular bread yeast is what I use
scant Tablespoon of Root beer extract, Zatarain's is what I have but other brands make it as well, use the correct amount for the instructions on the label
Water to make up 2 liters

Find a funnel that will fit the bottle. I have some nice flip top beer growlers that make great fermenting bottles.

Measure 3/4 cup of white sugar. I dissolve this in about 1 liter of tepid water before adding it to the bottle. Don't use hot water, it can kill the yeast.

Put the yeast into the bottle.

This is the Zatrarain's root beer concentrate I use.

Add a scant 1 tablespoon of the concentrate, or whatever your product calls for, to the bottle.

Pour in the water with the dissolved sugar, and top it up to about 2 inches from the top. Leave the 2 inch gap to allow for the CO2 gas.

Cap off the bottle and place in a warm, but not hot, place to ferment for a day or two. Then refrigerate and enjoy. If you use a regular 2 liter soda bottle with a screw on cap, be careful to avoid letting the pressure build up too much or it may explode. The flip top bottles have a rubber gasket that will let the pressure escape if it builds up too much.
